O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree

Here is our 2008 Christmas tree - it's small, but it's sweet. The lights are kind of ghetto, but I just used what I could find in the attic & we ran out of lights for the top. I love our Charlie Brown Christmas Tree!

I love collecting Christmas ornaments every year, & love when they have special meaning. It's so fun to unpack the ornaments every year & remember the stories & memories that come with them.

This wedding cake ornament was on one of the presents Cody gave me the night we got engaged - September 16, 2006

I got this ornament of a small wedding chapel Christmas 2006 - in honor our upcoming wedding

For as long as I can remember my mom has given us a precious moment ornament & I love it b/c now my tree is filled with all different kinds of precious moment ornaments. Here is the one she gave Cody & I last Christmas, 2007, our first Christmas as a married couple.

We got married on St. Patricks Day so when I saw this little St. Patricks Day hat, I wanted to get it for our tree this year.

I love the smell of fresh Christmas trees & right now thanks to my mom & grandma our house officially smells of Christmas. Here is the mini Christmas tree, my mom sends us one every year & I love it. I have it in my kitchen.
This year my grandma sent us this fresh door hanging - i love it!

Christmas Club

We had our annual Christmas Club at Young Life & it was a great time. I always look forward to anything Christmas - Christmas parties, Christmas dinners, & of course Christmas Club. We usually play the same games every year but kids don't seem to mind much.

This year my favorite thing about our Christmas club was the skit that all of the leaders did. We acted out the "12 Days of Christmas" while the song was playing. Keith was the pear tree & at the end of every verse the rest of the leaders would jump on him. For example, the second verse of song is, "on the second day of Christmas my true love gave to me 2 turtle doves & a partridge in a pear tree" we would all act like 2 turtle doves & then jump on Keith, as he was the pear tree. Super random, I know, but we had kids laughing.

Cody judging our Mr. Christmas contest
I ended the night by telling the kids the Christmas story out of Luke 2. I mostly talked about the journey of Mary of Joseph & how the same Jesus that was born in a manger in Bethlehem is the same Jesus that we have been talking about all semester. The Jesus that healed the blind, gave people life, & died on the cross is the same Jesus that was born in a barn.

I left them with Luke 2:10-11, "I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the city of David a Savior has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord." The same message that was told to the shepherds is still great news for us today -a Savior has been born for us.

This is our amazing YL team - they are definitely lights in a dark world.

Top row - Keith (he would not take off the batman mask), Cody, Emily, & Scott
Bottom row - Jake, Katie, & Jenna

Thanksgiving Break

We had a great Thanksgiving this year. We were very ready for a few days off from work & ready to eat & sleep in & that is exactly what we did. We were able to see lots of family & it was good to catch-up with everyone. I realized today that I hardly got any pictures of the cousins :(.

Here are a few pictures from the break:
Mamaw w/ Madison, Sophie, & Zeek
The fam out touring the ranch Kyle works on an hour west of town.
The boys grilling out at the ranch
Beautiful West Texas
Just doing a little target practice
While we were in town ACU had a play-off game & we got to go. ACU was actually really good at football this year & tons of alumni came in town for the game, I was shocked at how many old friends I ran into. Sadly, ACU lost - they will be back next season.

Happy Thanksgiving!!

We have so much to be thankful for this year. God continues to be so faithful in our lives in every way. Hopefully we will all get a chance to stop this week & thank the Lord for all the ways he blessed each & everyone of us.

Young Life these past few weeks has been so fun. Every Monday night I drive away from club blown away by the new amazing leaders that we have & the countless numbers of kids that continue to show up. These past few weeks we have talked to the kids about sin, the cross, & what that means to them in their life today.

Last Monday we did our annual turkey bowling & I talked about how the amazing love of Christ demands a response from us. I told the story from Mark 2 about the paralyzed man & how when Jesus forgave him of his sins & healed him he had 2 ways in which he could have responded. He could have accepted that Christ healed him & lived life in that or he could have continued to lay on his mat even though he had been healed. I told our kids that are in the same situation as the paralyzed man, we can respond in one of two ways - we can accept the love & free gift that Christ has given us or we can continue to sit where we are not be changed. We pray that all of our kids will choose love.

A couple of weeks ago we did our annual couch-0-rama & had tons of kids show up. We are really beginning to build some great traditions at club & it's so fun to see kids get really excited about Young Life.
We drove around looking for the worst couches we could find for couch-o-rama - couches like this:

California Fires

As many of you know last week there was a huge fire around Santa Barbara, California. This is a special place for my family because it is where Westmont is located, the place where my brother went to school, met his wife, & played soccer. It is also the place where my sister goes to school, the place where my brother-in-law graduated from, & the place where he proposed to my other sister, Hannah.

Because of the fire some of Westmont burned to the ground (a freshman dorm, faculty housing, the math building, etc.)& over 200 houses burned down. My sister is fine but many of her dear friends lost their homes. The soccer Coach at Westmont, Coach Wolf, who coached my brother & is a friend of our family, lost his house. Coach Wolf has 5 little kids & as he was coming back from soccer practice last week he saw the fire, went to his house, grabbed his kids, & was able to escape just in time. Despite all this the Westmont soccer team still played in a championship game & won.

If you have time, read the article below about Westmont & the soccer team, it will make you cry & keep praying for everyone at Westmont & in Santa Barbara, they have lost so much.

Bill Plaschke November 18, 2008

Harrison Hill kicked through the smoke of uncertainty, the soot of fear, finding the back of the net with a solid right foot on a spotless white ball. He kicked the first goal, the only goal his Westmont College team would need, then he turned and ran. He ran past the teammate who, at this moment, owned only the uniform on his back. He ran past a teammate who had prepared for the game by searching Craigslist for a place to sleep. He ran off the field, under the covered bench area, and into the arms of one who lost more than any of them.

In last week's Montecito fire, the home of Westmont Coach Dave Wolf burned to the ground. Hill hugged his teary-eyed teacher and lifted him to the sky. "This is the first brick in your new house," he whispered.
This is how the healing always begins, doesn't it? A community torn by tragedy searches for a reason to find each other. A group of athletes reaches beyond itself to become that reason. The healing, it seems, always starts with a game.

On Monday afternoon, on a pristine field abutted again against clear and majestic hills, there was a game like few others. Westmont College played Azusa Pacific University for the Golden State Athletic Conference championship and a spot in the NAIA national tournament. They played even though Westmont, a private Montecito college with an enrollment of 1,347, had been shut down since last week because of the wildfire. They played even though 15% of the campus had been destroyed, including faculty housing for about two dozen teachers and a handful of dorms for 50 students. They played even though they were supposed to play on Saturday, with no rest and no preparation, but the game was delayed by request of Azusa Pacific.

That's right. Imagine that. Azusa Pacific could have won by forfeit, yet the defending national champions insisted on postponing the game until they could bring the bedraggled Westmont soccer players to their campus, house them, feed them, and get them ready to play.
"At the end of the day, that title can burn up and those rings can melt away," said Phil Wolf, Azusa Pacific's coach and brother of the Westmont coach. "Sports are about relationships, family, brotherhood."
So, heavy underdogs with heavy minds, the Westmont players showed up on the Azusa campus last weekend with little chance of even paying attention until the game. "I couldn't even believe we were here," said Zach George, a freshman whose dorm room burned down, leaving him with nothing, not even his wallet or keys. " We had lost so much.

"But by the time they stepped on the Azusa Pacific field Monday, they had found something.
It was on the other sideline. It was standing five deep, the length of the field, stretching beyond the fences behind the goals, shrieking and cheering and chanting. It was their people. It was their school. Westmont was officially closed, but its heart had opened to pour out several hundred students and faculty who had driven two hours -- some even on a chartered bus -- to cheer for the first sign of post-fire life. The cheers of "West-mont" filled the humid air, far stronger than the remaining faint whiff of smoke. It sometimes even drowned out the "A-P-U" cheers from locals who made this gathering of about 500 people the biggest crowd in Azusa Pacific soccer history.

"I know this has been said before, but this time it's true," said Westmont freshman Austin Crowder, who was painted in the school colors of red and white. "We're here to show how we will rise from the ashes. "The Westmont players saw this, felt it, huddled around their coach before the game and choked back tears and prayed about it. By the time the game started, the burning had returned, only this time from within. "There was no way we were losing this game," said senior midfielder Jonathon Schoff. " I mean, no chance, not an option, no way. "The fans never quieted. The players never slowed. And no, there was no chance Westmont was losing this game. The Warriors beat the bigger, stronger, faster Cougars, 2-0, in a match that didn't feel that close. They seemingly won every contested ball. They appeared to win every race to every corner. They scored twice in the second half, both goals followed by runs directly into the coaches' arms. Just as the emotion fueled Westmont, it drained Azusa Pacific, the classy hosts overcome by their own generosity. "There was so much going for them, the fans, the momentum, the situation, it was too much for us to overcome," said junior midfield Eric Winblad. "We almost felt like the bad guys out there." That's sad, because rarely in Southern California sports has there been a better show of sportsmanship than this, Azusa Pacific sacrificing its chance at a title defense to give Westmont a fair shot at taking it. As impressive as the resilience of the conquerors was the kindness of the conquered. Goodness, the school didn't even charge admission to the game and offered the Westmont fans a free lunch of pizza and salad.
"I've lost a lot, but right now, I can't think of one thing I need," said Westmont's Dave Wolf. "The people of Azusa Pacific have given us everything. "Monday's game ended, and the Westmont fans streamed onto the field, surrounding their heroes, singing, chanting, then coming together for a most amazing final embrace. They tunneled. That's right, just like parents in a youth soccer game, they lined up across from each other, stretched out their arms, clasped hands, and formed a tunnel through which the players ran. Darn thing stretched about 50 yards, from Azusa toward Montecito, from despair to hope.

Wolf will soon begin a daunting search for a home for himself, his wife and their five children. But for a few minutes Monday, anything was possible, the sixth-place Warriors advancing to the national tournament, scheduled to host a first-round match next weekend even though they don't know if they still have a field.

"I know it's not a very sophisticated answer, but when you ask how I'm feeling about today, I can say only one thing to everyone," said Dave Wolf, staring red-eyed into a collection of kids dancing, laughing, rising from those ashes. "Thank you."

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

I pretty much love any holiday, so even though we didn't have big plans for Halloween, it was still fun. We started out the evening by going to a high school football game, but there were probably a total of 30 kids there, so we talked to them & then headed back to the YL house for a Halloween party. One of our leaders / neighbors has a birthday on Halloween so some other leaders got together to throw him a birthday party / Halloween party.

At the party w/ some of our friends Hayley & Jacob

No time + not much $ = old sing song costume as Halloween costume.

I went as a "league of their own" girl (Ko Jo Kai 04) & Cody was some kind of fat baseball player
I made a birthday / Halloween cake for the party

Last week I had a pumpkin carving party with some of our high school girls - it was fun, but my pumpkin was pathetic! Anyway, for the party I made chocolate chip pumpkin cookies, they were pretty good, here's the recipe in case anyone wants to try them.

Chocolate Chip Pumpkin Cookies
1 cup crisco
2 cups white sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
1 can pumpkin
4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsp baking soda and powder
1 tsp salt and cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg and cloves
1 bag chocolate chips and 1 cup nuts (optional)

Preheat oven to 375. Cream crisco and sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time. Stir in vanilla and pumpkin. Add dry ingredients (flour, soda, and seasonings). Fold in chocolate chips and nuts. Bake 12-15 minutes or until edges begin to brown.

**I always add extra cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.

This week we had our annual "YL Round-UP" or fundraising banquet. Banquet time is always a stressful time in the world of Young Life & I am always glad when it's over, but despite all the craziness & lack of sleep, I really enjoy YL banquets. I love the opportunity to invite people to come & hear about all that is going on in YL. It's a really cool way for not only parents to understand about YL, but also teachers, pastors, & really anyone who is interested in kids knowing Christ.

This year Cody & I talked about the opportunity we have to be leaders together & I felt like it went well. We wanted folks to know that YL leaders don't have to be collage age folks - it can be anyone. We talked about how YL is just a part of our life now & we wouldn't change that for anything.

After we shared a couple of our kids got up to share their testimonies & they did such a good job, I was so proud. Collin talked about how he found Jesus at camp & then as soon as he got on the bus to go home, he called his mom & said, "mom, I found God!" I love that.

We have banquets for many reasons, & of course one of the main reasons is to raise money so we can continue having YL & WL another year. We fell short of our goal this year, but we sort of expected that b/c of all the crazy things going on with the economy. We are grateful for all that we have & we are committed to being faithful with what God has given us.

Fall YL has been in full swing for a couple of months now & honestly it has been going great. One of the best parts about YL this fall has been the team that Cody & I are ministering with. Since last spring we have added 3 amazing members to our team. Keith, Jenna, & Jake are all new leaders & they are amazing. They have given our team life & the kids LOVE them. I am so thankful for them.

The first thing we did last week at YL was play a game called, "the tower of pain." We handed each kid a piece of big red gum & they were told to chew the gum, lick the wrapper & stick it on their forehead. I don't know if many of you have ever licked a big red gum wrapper & stuck in on your forehead, but after a few minutes (sometimes even seconds) of it being on there it begins to BURN. Anyway, after they had the wrapper on their foreheads' they had to get in groups of 10 & form a human pyramid. It was hilarious watching them do this b/c just as their group would get the pyramid down every ones' foreheads' would begin to burn, causing them to use their hands to remove the wrapper, causing their groups' pyramid to come tumbling down. For the first 5-10 minutes of club we did this & it was fun, kids' were laughing & taking pictures everywhere.
As the night went on we played a few more games, Cody came out once again as "Buck Norris" (not to be confused with Chuck Norris), & we ended the night with Cody sharing the story of Zacchaeus from Luke 19. He began by talking about hunting, he brought out a few things that are used in hunting to camouflage ourselves. Things such as, fox pee & unscented deodorant (used to cover up the scent of humans), camo masks & jackets, etc. He talked about the great lengths that a hunter will go through just to hide from animals & then asked the question, "what great lengths do we go to to hide ourselves from God & from others?" This led into the story of Zacchaeus & how he tried to hide from Jesus in a tree, but God sought him out & loved him for who he is.
Cody as "Buck Norris"

Sometimes when things are hard or I feel like I am just trying to keep things from crashing I think about why I still continue to do YL & usually when I am thinking about this God shows me many reasons. Lately I have been following the story about the lady who is selling her virginity on ebay. I been thinking about that girl a lot. Does she realize that there is hope? Does she know how much Jesus loves her? Does she know that someone already paid a great price for her? She must not know or she must not believe any of these things or she would not be doing this. What if someone told her about Jesus would she still be selling her body? I think about that & I think about all the kids I know & I pray they will know & believe the love of Christ & be secure in that forever.

Well... long time & no blog - sorry about that. I guess I kind of took a 2 month blogging sabbatical. But, I'm back now. For the past couple of months every time we did something I thought to myself, "I should blog about this" like - our first couple of YL clubs, trip to Abilene, evenings with friends, Cody's football season, etc. I will have to slowly catch-up.

Last weekend my little sister Hannah got married to Drew & it was such a great wedding weekend. I went down a couple days early to help Mom & Hannah do some pre-wedding things. I love weddings & I love helping out with weddings any way possible. We did lots of things for Hannah's wedding & it was so fun doing it all, but I really just loved getting to spend time with family while doing everything.

Here are some pictures from the weekend in totally random order:

The groom, bridesmaids, & flower girl

Bekah, Mom, Hannah, me, & Jane

My brother, Luke, & his wife Jane - it was SO GOOD to see them

We did the bridesmaid lunch at our house & it turned out great. The day before the lunch Aunt Ruth gave us Great Grandmother's china so we used it for the lunch & it was so perfect.

We could not have pulled off the lunch w/o Aunt Marcia, Amy, & Dave - thanks for all the help!

Sisters at the bachelorette party, it was fiesta themed & I made the cake

The family with our newest member, Drew, at rehearsal

The place where the ceremony was held, it was so pretty & the arch looks great thanks to Jane

Beautiful fall flowers were the center pieces for all the tables

Fun picture with Hannah & all her bridesmaids

The wedding was great & we are excited to have Drew a part of the family.

First Day of School

This was the first week back at school for Cody. Summer is officially over & we are launching into another school year. I am a little sad that summer is over, but it was a great summer & I am excited about all the things going on this fall.

While Cody spent his first week back at school, I spent the week at Young Life regional meetings in Fort Worth. Our area joined a new region this year, so this was my first time to be with all the folks from the North Central Texas region & they are great. I walked away from the three days I spent with them encouraged and challenged to do all that I can do this year to better our YL ministry so that kids can meet Christ.

So, 2008-2009 school year - here we come!

End of Summer, Olympics, & Bus Driver Party

I pretty much think my life has revolved around the Olympics for the past 2 weeks. I have no problem coming home at night & watching 4 straight hours of Olympic coverage. There is just something about watching all of these amazing athletes compete to the very best of their ability while representing their country. I have been really emotional during these Olympics & I don't know why. Anyway, after this weekend I will officially have my life back & can stop rushing home after all of my night time meetings or activities to watch the Olympics.

Probably my favorite thing this year has been these girls:

They are amazing!

There have been some nights that I have been forced to take a break from the Olympics, but they have all been good reasons. We have continued to our Bible study with our high school kids every week & have had a great response. We are also doing Young Life & Wyldlife training a couple nights each week & I am so excited about the potential batch of new leaders that we might have coming in. We need leaders so bad, as almost all of our clubs have more kids than we know what to do with.

We also had a Bus Drivers / Good - bye to Arica Party this week. The Bus Drivers is the YMCA team that Cody plays on. The members of the team are mostly from church & the team & all of the teams fans have become some of our good friends. Arica has been such a good friend to me these past couple of years & she is moving away, I am sad, but excited for her. Arica & I have sat through many bus driver games together so in her honor I attempted to make a school bus out of cup cakes, it turned out OK.

Arica & I & my cup-cake school bus.

Here is some of the team (& their coach) with Arica & I at the party

This weekend is our last weekend before life gets crazy. School starts on Monday & with the start of school comes football season for Cody & lots & lots of Young Life craziness for me. We have had such a great summer & we both feel rested & ready to go into the school year. I am excited for another semester of football, Young Life, retreats, and everything else that comes with the fall. I think the hardest part for me will be going back to really only spending time with Cody on the weekends, but that makes those times all the more special.

Want to be in a movie?

For the past couple of weeks they have been filming a movie at the old fraternity house across the street from our house. The movie is called, "Rosayln" & unfortunately will be on DVD only. The plot is fraternity party gone wrong. Anyway, the whole process has been rather entertaining. They usually film from 7pm - 7am. Tonight they need a bunch of extras for a big scene, so if anyone's interested let me know.

Vacation - "All I ever wanted!"

Last weekend we went to Orange Beach, AL for a week & it was such a fun vacation! It was great to be with family & catch-up with everyone, as well as catching-up on some much needed rest. We definitely found a great vacation place & hopefully we can continue going to more places like it. The beach wasn't crowded at all & had lots of room for laying around or playing games. Our condo was overlooking the beach & had an amazing view during all hours of the day.

We have lots of great pictures, here are just a few to show what a great vacation it was.

All the girls attempting to do a jumping picture

All the boys doing the jumping picture

The sign on the store said, "please pull your pants up before entering the store, thanks" I just thought it was really funny so I had Hannah stand under it for a picture.

Cousins, aunt & uncle + Shannon

My Grandma & her 3 kids

My sisters & cousins, Abby & Megan

One my favorite parts of the week - floating!

The fam without Luke & Jane, we missed them SO MUCH!

Bekah & I doing what we pretty much did everyday - read & lay around

Cody & I on our porch

Our trip was so fun & we were definitely not ready to come home. Family vacations with cousins have kept our family really close for many years now & I am so thankful for all the great memories we have made. Thanks everyone for another great vacation, can't wait til next year!
